Today’s vernal equinox welcomed spring as well as Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. This sign runs from March 20th through April 19th. Ruled by the planet Mars (aggression, passion, competition) and represented by the ram, this sign is known as a courageous, fun-loving, and fiery persona of the zodiac. Aries is associated with diamond, aquamarine, and the color red as well as geranium, honeysuckle, and sweet pea.
The archetype of Aries inspires me to think of leadership, action, and beginnings (of creative projects, business ventures, and relationships). Translated onto the face as a canvas, I interpret Aries as bold colors and drama. An Aries-inspired look requires confidence. Here are a few looks that I find to be inspired by the Aries archetype and a list of products that you can try out if you would like to bring the flair and adventurousness of this sign into your world.
Lime Crime’s Zodiac Glitter in Aries has a warm orange-gold hue with a hint of green and can be applied as a wash of color on the entire eye area or concentrated with a mixing medium to apply as eyeliner. This could also be used as a highlighter on the face and as a lip color (always check ingredients first before applying an eye product on lips).
Sugarpill’s Imperial False Eyelashes will add drama to any look. Personally, these lashes remind me of a harlequin doll.
This liquid eyeliner by Lime Crime in Citreuse is not for the faint of heart: wear it alone for a very modern take on the classic pin-up winged liner or create a look similar to the example given on Lime Crime’s website:
These are great examples of the avante garde looks that incorporate elements of Aries:
Melt Cosmetics has a beautiful line of opaque matte lip colors. One of their more daytime-friendly shades is "Bang! Bang!" which is a fiery orange red. This shade would compliment a surprisingly wide range of skin tones.
I consider this lip color to be iconic for Lime Crime as a brand and notice that it has gained popularity recently as a result of pastel hair and makeup trends (including nu-goth).
These looks range from subdued to editorial interpretations of Aries.
… and one last look, inspired by Aries with a smattering of inspiration from the film Velvet Goldmine for good measure!
